Angela Bassett was born to Betty Jane and Daniel Benjamin Bassett who was a civil servant and also the son of a preacher. She has won numerous honors, including three Black Reel Awards, a Golden Globe Award, seven NAACP Image Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, in addition to being nominated for an Academy Award and seven Primetime Emmy Awards.
After graduating from Yale University in the 1980s, Bassett started her acting career. Bassett had her breakthrough performance as singer Tina Turner in the biopic What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993), which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
This came after a few small appearances, including one as Reva Styles in Boyz n the Hood (1991). The Jacksons: An American Dream (1992), Voletta Wallace in Notorious (2009), Amanda Waller in Green Lantern (2011), and Coretta Scott King in Betty & Coretta are just a few of the critically praised and financially successful movies she went on to star in (2013).
